Transforming Brewing Operations and Education at VLB
VLB Berlin has been a leader in brewing research and education for over a century. The institute is always seeking new ways to innovate, and that includes the recent integration of the PLAATO Pro into its pilot brewery operations. We talked with Michel Werner to learn about the benefits realized over the past two years.

“We have brewers and students from all over the world come to us to complete the Certified Brewmaster Course; from South Africa to South Korea. The course is 6 months long and is very hands-on. The course is designed not only to teach the fundamentals of brewing but to also educate on the role of digitalization in the industry. The brewing industry is changing and digitalization is essential to maintain brewery standards. We originally purchased the PLAATO Pro back in January 2022 as part of a two-year research project and now use it as both a fermentation and educational tool. The PLAATO Pro delivers exactly what we need; density readings and temperature. It enables us to see the process of degradation 12 hours after pitching and to monitor the final stages of fermentation for possible intervention. Of course, we still take manual measurements but the tool enables us to validate exactly what’s happening during the fermentation and the impact of changes. I am very happy with the PLAATO Pro and I would recommend any brewery to use it as standardized practice or for educational facilities to introduce the benefits of digitalization.” |
